[ARCHIVED] Smoke is in the Air: Are You Ready?

Wildfire season is here, and smoke is in the air. Our neighbors in Lincoln and Sublette Counties are dealing with significant fires that were discovered in the last week, prompting closures and evacuations. Though no protective actions have been ordered in Teton County, the smoke in the air serves as a good reminder to make sure that you are READY.

Teton County Emergency Management reminds the public that being READY means being prepared in advance of a disaster or emergency. Don’t wait for someone to tell you – you should be ready year-round to keep yourself safe from hazards that are likely to occur in our area. 

Review the wildfire preparedness checklist below, then share this information with friends and family. It takes whole-community participation to make our whole community safer. 

Sign up for Teton_WY Alerts: Teton County, Wyoming’s free emergency notification service. 

Ensure you are set up to receive timely, credible, emergency and life safety information.

  • Visit tcincident.org and click “Sign up” at the top of the page.
  • Enter contact information and up to five addresses in Teton County, Wyoming, where you spend time.

Ensure you have 3+ ways to receive emergency information.

Systems can fail, communication sites can go down, and you can’t always rely on your cell phone.

  • Get a NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radio with an automatic alerting feature. 
  • Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) in your mobile device settings.
  • Bookmark Emergency Management’s incident webpage, tcincident.org, in your web browser.
  • Follow Teton County Emergency Management on Facebook (teton.wy.ema) and X (@tetonwyo_em).
  • Use radio presets for local stations that broadcast alerts (1340 AM, 88.3 FM, 89.1 FM, 93.5 FM, 95.3 FM, 96.3 FM, 96.9 FM).

Stay alert, monitor conditions, and obey fire restrictions.

  • Check tetonfires.com for local fire information including current fire restrictions.
  • Visit inciweb.wildfire.gov to find national wildfire news, maps, closures, and more.
  • Go to weather.gov/fire to see current fire weather conditions and outlooks.
  • See fire.airnow.gov for a map showing air quality sensors, smoke plumes, and more.

Create and practice a family emergency plan.

Understand Teton County’s Ready, Set, GO! system.

Know that you may be asked to STAY or AVOID. GO (evacuation) is not the only protective action.Protective Actions Flowchart with Ready

Understand your insurance coverage in case of damage or loss due to wildfire.

  • Review your policy to make sure you know the amount and types of coverage you have.
  • Check your insurance to see if it covers lodging or hotel costs, should you be evacuated from your home.

Check your Go Bag and make sure it’s accessible.
